A news producer at NBC’s Chicago affiliate goes on the air to blast his own program’s breathless coverage of the first snowfall of the year. In classic “what really grinds my gears” style, Ben Bowman takes aim at news coverage that tells us things we already know, interviews people that contribute nothing to the conversation, and spins everything into a crisis. It’s a critique that applies not just to storm coverage, but to virtually everything that the news-entertainment complex touches. My favorite part is when he reads the overly florid promo copy, which must have embarrassed some poor copywriter who just finished “Creative Writing 101.” The best that the two talking hairdos next to him could come up with in response was, “but our ratings were good!”
