Happy belated birthday to William H. Cosby, Jr. (“The Cos”) who turned 70 yesterday, July 12th. May Bill Cosby be around to sell pudding pops for another 70.
Also, yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of this game, the Francisco Cordova/Ricardo Rincon combined no-hitter for the Pirates against the Houston Astros at Three Rivers Stadium. Utility outfielder Mark Smith broke a 0-0 tie and won the game with a 3-run home run in the 10th inning. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has remembrance of that game here. That game, and the whole 1997 “freak show” team (which contended for the division title with a $9 million payroll), are arguably the brightest moments in the post-Barry Bonds era for the Buccos. Pretty depressing, if you think about it.
