GOP activists can scratch two names off of their lists for fantasy 2008 candidates. Both Dick Cheney and Condi Rice reiterated over the weekend that they will not be running for president. “I don’t know how many ways to say no. I’m not somebody who wants to run for office. I have no interest in being a candidate for anything,” Rice said. I would have been skeptical of the chances of either candidate, anyway. Cheney is a polarizing candidate like a Newt Gingrich of 1996 vintage, while Rice doesn’t meet the “popular General of a popular war” exception to the “must have held prior public office” rule.
