Abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America has decided not to endorse either candidate in Virginia’s gubernatorial race. The group endorsed Democrats for all of the lower statewide offices, but declined to endorse Democratic gubernatoral nominee Tim Kaine, because he favors some restrictions on abortions (though he has said he wouldn’t sign any into law). While Kaine, a Catholic, says he is personally opposed to abortion and would sign into law a ban on partial birth procedures, he has also said he would not “criminalize” women and doctors by signing other restrictions. Apparently it’s not enough for NARAL that a candidate is “hands off” with regards to abortion; he or she has to be an enthusiastic supporter of abortion rights.
The Republican candidate Jerry Kilgore is pro-life, except for the usual exceptions of rape, incest, and life of the mother.
