Former Vice President Al Gore is launching his own cable television channel. Gore, who is best known on television from his breakout role as the 2000 Democratic presidential nominee, said the channel will be called Current and will launch August 1st of this year. The 24-hour news and information channel (yes, another one!) will not have any perceptible political slant, the former vice president said. Current’s target audience is the 18- to 34-year-old demographic and will feature stories by and about people of that age, focusing on topics loftier than partisan politics. It will start out with a potential audience of approximately 20 million viewers on the Time Warner and Comcast cable systems as well as on DirecTV. The goal is to reach a potential audience of 50 million in the next five years.
The words “lead balloon” come to mind.
