I have to laugh a little at all the Christian and conservative commentators who are disappointed at the seeming relativism coming from the lips of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the newest Star Wars film (which I will see this weekend). Here’s one guy from Belief.net who takes the whole thing a little too seriously. It’s just a movie, folks.
But really, did we not see this coming? Everyone disappointed with Jedi relativism needs to go to Blockbuster and rent Return of the Jedi once more. Remember how Kenobi explained his lie about the status of Anakin Skywalker to Luke ? Let’s refresh:
Luke: Why didn’t you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father.
Obi-Wan: Your father… was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true… from a certain point of view.
Luke: A certain point of view?
Obi-Wan: Luke, you’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.
Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Call it relativism, call it postmodernism, just don’t call it new. We’ve had over 20 years to anticipate that Jedis don’t exactly believe in absolute truth the way a lot of Christians or conservatives understand it.
